About the Sutherland Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records Sutherland as a Clan/Family tartan. The Sutherland name is worn in several setts, including a dark green and blue Sutherland close to the old military pattern and a brighter red dress version, all worn in ancient and modern shades.
Clan Sutherland holds the great northern shire that bears its name, and its chief is the Earl of Sutherland, holder of the premier earldom in the Peerage of Scotland. The plant badge is cotton sedge, the slogan Ceann na Drochaide Bige, and the motto Sans Peur, "without fear."
Sutherland Tartan Pattern and Colours
The Sutherland tartan is best known in a dark green and blue sett with black, close to the old Highland military pattern, and in a brighter red dress version. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.
Sutherland Heritage
The name is Norse in origin: to the men of Orkney and Caithness this great northern country lay to the south, and they called it Sudrland, the southern land. The clan descends from Freskin, a Flemish lord settled in Moray by David I, whose line also gave rise to Clan Murray; his descendant William was created Earl of Sutherland about 1230, the premier earldom of Scotland, with its seat at Dunrobin Castle above the Moray Firth.
The Sutherlands were long at feud with the Sinclairs of Caithness to the north and the MacKays of Strathnaver to the west, and in 1514 the earldom passed by marriage into the house of Gordon. Unlike most Highland clans, they supported the government in the Jacobite risings. In the early nineteenth century the Sutherland estates were the scene of some of the most extensive of the Highland Clearances, when many families were moved from the inland straths and a great number emigrated — which is why the Sutherland name is now carried across Canada, America and Australasia.
