Best For Anyone Without a Clan Tartan

About the Pride of Scotland Tartan

Pride of Scotland is a universal tartan — it belongs to no clan, no family and no district, and that is exactly the point. It was designed in 1996 by Scott Millson at McCalls of Aberdeen for the many people, in Scotland and across the world, who love the country but have no clan tartan of their own to wear.

Since then it has become one of the most popular of all modern tartans, worn at weddings, graduations, Highland games and gatherings from Aberdeen to Auckland. It is woven in Modern, Ancient, Weathered and Dress finishes, so the same sett can be had in strong, soft, muted or bright colouring.

Pride of Scotland Tartan Pattern and Colours

The sett is built on a deep blue ground, crossed with purple and green and lifted by fine lines of white and black. The blue stands for the wide skies and deep lochs, the purple for the heather that turns the hillsides in late summer, and the green for the fields and rolling country.

Pride of Scotland Heritage

For most of its history tartan belonged to clans and families, and those without such a connection had little to wear. From the twentieth century onward, weavers and designers began to create universal or national tartans open to all — and Pride of Scotland, designed in Aberdeen in 1996, became the best loved of them.

Its appeal lies in its openness. Descendants of emigrants who cannot trace a clan, friends marrying into Scottish families, pipe bands, sports supporters and visitors who simply fell in love with the country all wear it without any question of entitlement. In that sense it carries the older spirit of tartan into the modern world: cloth as a badge of belonging rather than a badge of exclusion.

Who Is This Collection For?

This collection is made for anyone who loves Scotland: those without a clan tartan, diaspora families whose line is lost, those marrying into a Scottish family, pipers, supporters, and visitors who want a tartan of their own.
