About the McLaughlin Clan Tartan
The McLaughlin name — in Gaelic Mac Lochlainn, "son of Lochlann" — is one of the great royal names of Ireland, of the Cenél nÉogáin branch of the northern Uí Néill. Those of the name may wear an Irish national or county tartan, or — reflecting the kinship of the Irish Mac Lochlainn and the Scottish MacLachlans — the MacLachlan tartan.
The Mac Lochlainn were seated at the great fort of Aileach in Inishowen, and their kin who crossed to Argyll became Clan MacLachlan. This collection brings a fitting tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts for the McLaughlin family.
McLaughlin Tartan Pattern and Colours
This collection draws on a rich ground of green and blue crossed with black and red — the deep colours of the north, shared by the Irish Mac Lochlainn and their Scottish MacLachlan kin, recalling the hills of Inishowen and the shores of Lough Swilly.
McLaughlin Heritage
The Mac Lochlainn were the leading family of the Cenél nÉogáin, rivals of the O'Neills for the kingship of the north, seated at the Grianán of Aileach, a great hilltop stone fort above Lough Swilly in Donegal. Domnall Ua Lochlainn, who died in 1121, and Muirchertach Mac Lochlainn, who died in 1166, both ruled as High Kings of Ireland, among the most powerful figures of the age before the Normans.
After a decisive defeat in the 13th century the family was eclipsed by the rival O'Neills, and lost the lordship of their Inishowen homeland, though McLaughlins remained numerous in Donegal and Derry. Kin of the same northern Uí Néill stock had earlier crossed to Argyll, where they became Clan MacLachlan. From Ulster the McLaughlin name spread across the world.
