About the County Mayo Tartan
The Mayo tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, and anyone with a Mayo connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; for a county that sent so many of its people overseas, a Mayo sett has become a much-loved way of keeping the name and the place together.
Mayo Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on cool teals and greens with darker lines — the Atlantic water of Clew Bay, the green of small western fields, and the grey of quartzite and stone wall that shape the Mayo landscape.
County Mayo Heritage
Mayo faces the open Atlantic with a coast of islands and inlets. Croagh Patrick rises above Clew Bay, climbed by pilgrims for well over a thousand years; Achill is the largest island off Ireland; and at the Céide Fields in the north, walls and field boundaries built by Neolithic farmers lie preserved beneath the blanket bog — among the oldest known field systems in the world.
Clew Bay was the sea-kingdom of Gráinne Mhaol, Granuaile, the sixteenth-century seafaring chieftain of the O'Malleys, remembered in Ireland as the pirate queen. At Ballintubber Abbey Mass has been offered for some eight hundred years without a break. Mayo suffered heavily in the Great Famine, and the emigration that followed carried the county's people to Britain, America and Australia in their tens of thousands.
