About the Malcolm Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Malcolm — also MacCallum — as a Clan/Family tartan. The Malcolm sett is a handsome design of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by a bright yellow line, a cool and dignified pattern of the western Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Malcolm, also Clan MacCallum, from the Gaelic Mac Ghille Chaluim, "son of the servant of Columba," is a Highland clan of Argyll. The clan motto In Ardua Tendit means "he aims at difficult things," making Malcolm tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Malcolm Tartan Pattern and Colours

Malcolm tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by a bright yellow line — cool, dignified colours of Argyll and the western sea-lochs. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Malcolm Heritage

The name MacCallum, from Mac Ghille Chaluim, marks a family dedicated to the service of Saint Columba, the great missionary of the western isles. The MacCallums settled in Lorn in Argyll by the end of the 13th century, and in 1414 Reginald MacCallum of Corbarron was made hereditary constable of Craignish Castle. In 1562 the family gained the lands of Poltalloch, by Loch Crinan, which became their long home.

In the late 18th century the chief, Dugald MacCallum of Poltalloch, took the name Malcolm, and his descendants have borne it since. The clan's seat is Duntrune Castle by Loch Crinan, one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles on the Scottish mainland. Colonel Edward Malcolm of Poltalloch is remembered as a father of the West Highland White Terrier breed. The present chief is Malcolm of Poltalloch. The crest is a tower, the motto In Ardua Tendit.
