About the MacNeil Clan Tartan

MacNeil Heritage

From Kisimul Castle, rising from a rock in Castlebay, the chiefs ruled Barra and its seas; Neil Og MacNeil fought for Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn and won lands in Kintyre.
The MacNeils were famous seafarers, and their chiefs a proud and independent breed: Ruari the Turbulent, the fifteenth chief, was reckoned the last of the Viking raiders. A herald was said to proclaim from the castle tower each evening that, MacNeil having dined, the princes of the earth might now do the same. In 1937 the American architect Robert Lister MacNeil bought back Barra and Kisimul, and restored the castle. The badge is a rock, the motto Buaidh no Bas.
