Inglis Clan Heritage
Richard Anglicus witnessed a charter for Melrose Abbey in the 12th century, and the name appears through the medieval Borders and Lothians. Branches of the family held Manner and Mannerhead in Peeblesshire, Cramond near Edinburgh, and Murdieston and Mauldslie in Lanarkshire. The Inglises were known for their service to the crown, in arms, in law and in the councils of the realm.
General Sir William Inglis won lasting fame at the Battle of Albuera in 1811, when, gravely wounded, he called to his regiment, "Die hard, 57th, die hard!" — winning them the nickname "the Die Hards." John Inglis, Lord Glencorse, rose to be Lord Justice-General of Scotland, one of the greatest judges of his age. The arms bear a rampant lion, and the mottoes Nobilis Est Ira Leonis and Recte Faciendo Securus, "safe in acting rightly."
