About the Burnett Tartan
Clan Burnett is an Aberdeenshire clan of Anglo-Norman origin, descended from the de Bernard family who came north with David I in the 12th century. The chiefly line became the Burnetts of Leys, settled on Deeside, while a junior branch became the Burnetts of Barns in the Borders. A clan with its own chief — James Burnett of Leys, Baron of Leys — and its great seat at Crathes Castle, the Burnetts have their own distinctive tartan.

Burnett Clan Heritage
Alexander Burnard supported Robert the Bruce and in 1323 was granted lands in the Forest of Drum on Deeside, together with the office of royal forester — his badge of office the Horn of Leys, an ancient carved ivory hunting horn said to have been a gift from the Bruce himself, which still hangs in the hall at Crathes Castle. For their first two centuries the family lived on a crannog, an island dwelling on the Loch of Leys, before raising a great house on dry land.
In 1553 the Burnetts began building Crathes Castle, a fine tower house completed by 1596 and home to the family for some 350 years, until given to the National Trust for Scotland in 1952. The Burnetts also held Muchalls Castle on the coast. The eccentric scholar James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, was an early thinker on the origins of language. The crest is a hand holding a knife, and the motto Virescit Vulnere Virtus — "courage grows strong at a wound."
