The Wisemans were among the leading families of Moray in the Wars of Independence. William Wiseman was appointed Sheriff of Elgin in 1305, and his brother Alexander was made Sheriff of Forres and Nairn in the same year — two brothers holding the king's offices across the province.
William was stripped of his offices and lands for supporting Robert the Bruce. He escaped the rout at Methven in 1306, and his wife was taken at Kildrummy along with the queen; he afterwards fought with Sir James Douglas at the Pass of Brander, took Skelbo Castle in 1308 and pressed the siege of Elgin. He lived until 1346, and the name remained in Moray and the north-east long after.
