About the Roberts of Wales Tartan

The Roberts of Wales tartan belongs to the series of modern Welsh family setts designed in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, in collaboration with the Wales Tartan Centres.

Welsh tartan is a modern tradition rather than an inherited one — historic Welsh dress meant the gown and tall hat, not the kilt — and these setts carry no medieval clan history. The words "of Wales" identify the design series, not any territorial claim.

Roberts Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Welsh family setts are built with their own conventions, often using odd numbers of threads and differing warp and weft. This collection draws on deep blues and greens with darker lines — the blue-grey of Gwynedd slate and the green of the fields below the quarries.

The Roberts Name

Roberts means son of Robert, a name brought into Britain by the Normans and taken up widely in Wales. Under the patronymic system a man was ap Robert; when fixed surnames took hold from the Tudor period the form settled as Roberts, and it became one of the commonest names in the country, above all in Caernarfonshire, Anglesey and Denbighshire.

The name is bound up with the slate country of the north, where whole villages of Robertses worked the quarries of Bethesda, Llanberis and Blaenau Ffestiniog. From that world came Kate Roberts of Rhosgadfan, a quarryman's daughter who became the finest Welsh-language prose writer of her century, and Evan Roberts, the young collier whose preaching drove the religious revival of 1904.

Who Is This Collection For?

This collection is made for those of the Roberts name, families with Gwynedd, Anglesey and north Wales roots, slate-quarrying descendants, Welsh-language households and anyone who wants a tartan that names a Welsh family.
