About the Owen of Wales Tartan
The Owen of Wales tartan is one of the modern Welsh family setts created in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, in collaboration with the Wales Tartan Centres.
Welsh tartan is a modern tradition, and these designs are not drawn from medieval records — but few Welsh names carry more weight of history than Owain, and the cloth is worn with real feeling at Welsh gatherings around the world.
Owen Tartan Pattern and Colours
The Welsh family setts follow their own conventions of thread and weave. This collection draws on bold reds and greens with a gold accent — the red of the dragon banner and the green of the Gwynedd hills.
The Owen Name
Owain was one of the great princely names of Wales. Owain Gwynedd, who died in 1170, ruled the north for over thirty years and held his own against the power of Henry II. Two centuries later Owain Glyndŵr rose in 1400 against the rule of Henry IV, was proclaimed Prince of Wales, held parliaments at Machynlleth and Harlech, and became the last Welshman to bear that title.
As fixed surnames replaced the patronymic system, ap Owain gave both Owen and Bowen, and the names spread through every part of Wales. In the modern age Robert Owen of Newtown in Montgomeryshire, mill owner and social reformer, became a founding figure of the co-operative movement, carrying the name into a different kind of history.
