About the O'Farrell Clan Tartan
The O'Farrell name — in Gaelic Ó Fearghail, from a word meaning "man of valour" — is an old Irish name of the midlands, not a Scottish clan but a Gaelic kindred of Annaly, the country that is now County Longford. Those of the name wear an Irish national or county tartan, honouring their midland roots.
The O'Farrells took their name from Fearghal, a lord of Annaly said to have fallen at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. This collection brings a fitting Irish tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.
O'Farrell Tartan Pattern and Colours
This collection draws on a cool ground of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — dignified colours of the Irish midlands, the lakes and pastures of Longford and the upper Shannon.
O'Farrell Heritage
The O'Farrells were lords of Annaly, the ancient territory that corresponds closely to modern County Longford, and they held it for some six hundred years. Their chief stronghold gave the county town its name: Longford is from the Irish Longphort Uí Fhearghail, "the fortress of O'Farrell."
In time the family divided into two great branches, known as O'Farrell Buí and O'Farrell Bán, the yellow and the fair, who between them ruled the north and south of Annaly. They founded a Dominican friary at Longford in 1400 and long resisted the pressure of the Anglo-Norman lords about them. After the confiscations of the seventeenth century many O'Farrells took service abroad, and the name spread through Europe and the Americas.
