About the Jones of Wales Tartan

The Jones of Wales tartan belongs to the series of modern Welsh family setts designed in the late 1990s by Sheila Daniel at the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys, in collaboration with the Wales Tartan Centres.

Welsh tartan is a modern tradition rather than an ancient one — historic Welsh dress meant the gown and tall hat, not the kilt — and these setts carry no medieval clan history. The words "of Wales" identify the design series, not a territorial claim. What they do offer is a cloth that names a Welsh family.

Jones Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Welsh family setts are built differently from Scottish tartans, often using odd numbers of threads and differing warp and weft. This collection draws on deep blues and greens with a red accent — the blue of Welsh rivers and slate, the green of the hills, and the red of the dragon.

The Jones Name

Jones means son of John — Siôn in Welsh — and it is the most numerous surname in Wales by a long way. That abundance created a problem the Welsh solved with characteristic humour: since a village might hold a dozen men called John Jones, people were distinguished by trade, farm or feature, so that a community would know exactly who was meant by Jones the Bread, Jones the Post or Jones the Milk.

The name spread with the Welsh themselves — to the coalfields of Pennsylvania, the mining towns of Australia, and the Welsh settlement in Patagonia. One of the best-loved bearers was Mary Jones, a weaver's daughter from Llanfihangel-y-Pennant, who in 1800 walked some twenty-five miles barefoot over the hills to Bala to buy a Welsh Bible — a journey that helped inspire the founding of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
