Explore the history of Clan Gordon

How it all started

Territories

Clan Gordon rose to prominence in the northeast of Scotland, particularly in Aberdeenshire and the surrounding Lowlands. Their influence expanded significantly from the 14th century onward, as they became staunch supporters of the Scottish crown. The Gordons held vast estates in Strathbogie (modern Huntly), Moray, and the borders of the Highlands, where they acted as powerful wardens. They frequently played decisive roles in battles, politics, and religious conflicts throughout Scottish history.

Clan Chief

The current chief of Clan Gordon is Granville Charles Gomer Gordon, 13th Marquess of Huntly. He is the premier Marquess of Scotland, and the Gordon family's ancestral seat was Gordon Castle in Moray, once one of the grandest houses in the country. Though much reduced from its original form, part of the castle remains in private hands and continues to represent the enduring legacy of Clan Gordon.

Gordon Castle - Clan Gordon History

Gordon Castle

Location: Fochabers, Moray, Scotland

Gordon Castle, situated in Moray near the banks of the River Spey, served as the principal seat of Clan Gordon, one of the most influential families in northeastern Scotland. The estate has its origins in the 15th century, but the grand mansion known today was largely developed during the 18th century under the Dukes of Gordon.

Originally a stronghold, the early castle was strategically important during the turbulent clan feuds and the Jacobite risings. The Gordons were powerful allies of the Scottish crown and held the title of Earl of Huntly, later elevated to Marquess and Duke of Gordon. Their support was pivotal in shaping the political landscape of the Highlands.

During the 1760s, the 4th Duke of Gordon commissioned architect John Adam to design a luxurious palace-like residence, incorporating parts of the old castle into a grand Georgian mansion. At its height, Gordon Castle was one of the largest houses in Scotland.

Much of the original structure was lost in the 20th century due to war requisitions and economic decline, but a portion of the castle still remains and has been beautifully restored. The surrounding grounds are home to one of Britain’s largest productive walled gardens, a highlight for modern visitors.

Gordon Castle stands as a living monument to Clan Gordon’s prestige, their contributions to Scotland’s nobility, and the resilience of a heritage that continues to thrive.
