Clan Stewart of Appin is the west Highland branch of Clan Stewart, a distinct clan since the fifteenth century, whose chief is styled Stewart of Appin, in Gaelic MacIain Stiùbhairt na h-Apainn. The plant badge is oak, the war cry Creag an Sgairbh, from the rock on which Castle Stalker stands.

Stewart of Appin Heritage
The Appin Stewarts descend from Sir John Stewart of Lorn, and became a distinct clan in the fifteenth century after the violent death of Sir John at Dunstaffnage, where he was mortally wounded on his way to his own wedding — and, with his last breath, married the mother of his son Dugald, who became the first of Appin. From their stronghold of Castle Stalker on its tidal rock, the clan held Appin, Duror and Lismore.
The Appin Stewarts were among the most steadfast Jacobites: they rose in 1715 and again in 1745, when the Appin Regiment carried the white banner of the Stewarts at Culloden and suffered terrible losses holding the line. Their story runs through the west Highlands from the Lordship of the Isles to the years after the rising. The chiefly line is represented today by Stewart of Appin and Ardsheal.
