About the County Sligo Tartan
The Sligo tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, and anyone with a Sligo connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; they have earned their place through adoption by Irish families, especially those abroad who want to name their own corner of the country.
Sligo Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on cool teals and greens with darker lines — the Atlantic water of Sligo Bay, the green of the plain beneath the mountains, and the grey limestone of Benbulben and Knocknarea.
County Sligo Heritage
Sligo is shaped by two great hills: Benbulben, a limestone table rising sheer above the northern plain, and Knocknarea to the west, crowned by an enormous unopened cairn that tradition names as the grave of Queen Medb. Between them, at Carrowmore, lies one of the largest megalithic cemeteries in Europe, with tombs raised more than five thousand years ago.
The county is bound up with the poet W. B. Yeats, who spent his boyhood summers here and drew a lifetime of imagery from Lough Gill, Glencar and the mountain; he is buried in the churchyard at Drumcliffe under Benbulben. Sligo town grew as a port at the mouth of the Garavogue, and the county was long shared between the O'Conor Sligo and their neighbours.
