The O'Neills were the chief family of the Cenél nÉogáin, the northern Uí Néill, and lords of Tír Eógain — the country that is now Tyrone. Their kings were inaugurated at Tullyhogue, seated upon the stone chair called Leac na Rí, in a ceremony performed by the O'Hagans and O'Cahans, and their power in the north lasted from the tenth century to the seventeenth.
The most famous of the line was Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, who led the northern lords in the Nine Years' War against the armies of Elizabeth I, winning at the Yellow Ford in 1598 before defeat at Kinsale in 1601. In 1607 he and the northern earls left Ireland for the Continent in what is remembered as the Flight of the Earls, an event that changed the course of Ulster history. Branches of the family — the O'Neills of Clandeboye and others — carried the name onward, and the chiefly title endures.
