About the O'Connor Clan Tartan
The O'Connor name — in Gaelic Ó Conchobhair — is among the greatest of the royal names of Ireland, not a Scottish clan but a Gaelic royal house of Connacht. Those of the name wear an O'Connor family tartan or an Irish national or county tartan, honouring their roots in the western province.

Their inauguration place was at Carnfree near Rathcroghan, the ancient royal site of the province, and their strongholds included Ballintober and Roscommon Castle.
Turlough Mór O'Connor, who ruled from 1088 to 1156, became High King of Ireland, and his son Rory was the last High King before the Norman coming; both lie at Clonmacnoise. The family divided into the great branches of O'Conor Don, O'Conor Roe and O'Conor Sligo, while a separate line, the O'Connors of Offaly, held sway in Leinster. The head of the family is still The O'Conor Don, whose seat is Clonalis House by Castlerea, where the inauguration stone of the kings of Connacht is still kept.
