About the McCoy Family Tartan
The McCoy name has more than one origin. In the Scottish line it is a form of MacKay, the great clan of the far north, carried south to Kintyre and across to Ulster in the great migrations of the 17th century; many of the Ulster and American McCoys spring from these Scottish MacKays. There is also a separate Irish origin, from the Gaelic Mac Aodha, "son of Aodh." Those of the Scottish line are most fittingly matched with the MacKay tartan.
