About the MacRae Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacRae as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacRae sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red, a cool and dignified pattern of the north-west Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades, with a red dress and a hunting version.
Clan MacRae, from the Gaelic Mac Rath, "son of grace" or good fortune, is a Highland clan long settled in Kintail in Wester Ross. The clan motto Fortitudine means "with fortitude," making MacRae tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.
MacRae Tartan Pattern and Colours
MacRae tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red — cool, dignified colours of Kintail and Loch Duich. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper, with red dress and green hunting versions also worn.
MacRae Heritage
The MacRaes are said to have come from Ireland and settled first at Clunes near Beauly, before moving to Kintail in the 14th century, where the Mackenzies were rising to power. Sharing a common descent with the Mackenzies, the MacRaes became their most trusted followers, so loyal in war that they were called the "Mackenzies' shirt of mail." For generations they were the hereditary constables of Eilean Donan Castle, guarding it for the Mackenzie chiefs.
When the MacDonalds of Sleat besieged Eilean Donan in 1539, Duncan MacRae is said to have slain the MacDonald chief with an arrow, ending the siege. The MacRaes fought at Sheriffmuir and Glen Shiel for the Jacobite cause, and were famous throughout the Highlands as bold fighters. An armigerous clan today, they proudly wear the Mackenzie chief's heraldry. The crest is an arm grasping a sword, the war cry Sgurr Uaran, the motto Fortitudine.
