About the MacDonell Tartan
The MacDonells — the spelling used by the Glengarry, Keppoch and Antrim branches of Clan Donald — descend from Ranald, a son of John, first Lord of the Isles. The MacDonells of Glengarry held the wild country of Glengarry and Lochaber, a hardy Highland people famed for their loyalty and their fighting spirit. As a branch of Clan Donald, they carry the great motto Per Mare Per Terras and their own tartan.

MacDonell Clan Heritage
The MacDonells of Glengarry held their lands from the line of Ranald, and their kinsmen the MacDonells of Keppoch were famous as one of the last clans to live by the old Highland ways. Fierce in the defence of their name, the MacDonells were staunch Jacobites, fighting for the Stuart cause at Killiecrankie, Sheriffmuir, Prestonpans and Culloden, where they were among the bravest on the field.
Alasdair Ranaldson MacDonell of Glengarry, the last great Highland chief of the old style, was painted by Raeburn in full Highland dress and is thought to have inspired the character of Fergus MacIvor in Sir Walter Scott's Waverley. The MacDonells of Antrim, sprung from Keppoch through a marriage into Ireland, carried the name across the sea to Ulster. The motto is Per Mare Per Terras, the slogan Creagan an Fhithich, "the Raven's Rock."
