About the County Londonderry Tartan
The Londonderry tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, so anyone with a connection to it may wear it.
The county is called Londonderry, and the city is widely known as Derry; both names are in everyday use, and this collection is for everyone with roots there whichever name they use. The county tartans are modern designs rather than ancient patterns, adopted by families at home and across the diaspora.
Londonderry Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on warm reds and greens with darker lines — the red long borne in the city's arms, the green of the Roe valley and Sperrin foothills, and the darker tones of stone wall and river.
County Londonderry Heritage
The city grew from Doire, the oak grove, where Saint Columba founded a monastery in the sixth century before sailing for Iona. Its walls were built between 1613 and 1618 by the London companies who gave the county its longer name, and they still stand complete around the old town — among the finest and best preserved city walls anywhere in these islands.
The county runs from the Foyle east along the north coast, with the long strand at Benone, the salmon river of the Bann on its eastern boundary, and the Sperrin Mountains rising inland. It was near Dungiven that a set of seventeenth-century clothing was recovered from a bog, giving Ireland its rare surviving example of the checked cloth once worn here — the source of the modern Ulster tartan.
