About the Fraser Tartan

Clan Fraser is one of the great clans of Scotland, of Norman origin, whose name is linked to the French fraise, "strawberry" — the silver strawberry flowers, or fraises, that still adorn the clan arms. First recorded in Scotland around 1160, the Frasers rose to hold two great chiefships: the Frasers of Lovat in the Highlands, led by Lord Lovat, and the Frasers of Philorth, led by Lord Saltoun. The Frasers have a rich array of their own distinctive tartans.

Whether you bear the Fraser name, descend from Inverness-shire or Aberdeenshire, or simply admire one of Scotland's most famous clans, this collection brings the Fraser tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Fraser Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Fraser tartan is a bold and striking sett built on a deep red ground crossed with navy and green and lined with white — warm, handsome colours worn as the clan's dress tartan. The green-based Fraser Hunting, or Lovat, tartan offers quieter, woodland tones for everyday and outdoor wear.

Fraser Clan Heritage

Sir Simon "the Patriot" Fraser fought for Robert the Bruce and, by tradition, saved the king's life three times at Methven in 1306, for which the three crowns entered the clan arms; he was executed by the English that same year. Simon, a younger brother of Sir Alexander Fraser, Chamberlain to the Bruce, acquired the lands of Lovat around Beauly through marriage to a Bisset heiress, and his line became the Frasers of Lovat, known in Gaelic as MacShimidh, "Son of Simon."

In 1544 the Frasers fought the ferocious Battle of the Shirts against the MacDonalds, so called because the warriors cast off their plaids in the heat. Simon, 11th Lord Lovat, the cunning "Old Fox," led the clan into the Jacobite rising of 1745 and was beheaded in London after Culloden, where the Frasers charged with terrible courage. The senior line, the Frasers of Philorth, are Lords Saltoun and chiefs of the whole name. The crest is a stag's head, the badge yew, the motto Je Suis Prest.
