About the County Donegal Tartan
The Donegal tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan belonging to the county rather than to any family, and open to all who claim a connection with it.
There is a pleasing fitness in a Donegal tartan, for no Irish county is more closely bound to cloth: Donegal tweed, flecked with the colours of the hills, has been handwoven in the county for generations and is known the world over.
Donegal Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on the flecked, heathery colours of the Donegal hills — gold and ochre of bracken and gorse, green of pasture, and the blue of the Atlantic beyond, in the same spirit as the tweed the county is famous for.
County Donegal Heritage
Donegal is the north-western corner of Ireland: Malin Head is the northernmost point of the island, the sea cliffs of Slieve League among the highest in Europe, and the glens of Glenveagh some of the wildest country left in the country. Its coast is a long procession of headlands, strands and islands facing the open Atlantic.
This was Tir Chonaill, ruled by the O'Donnells with the O'Dohertys of Inishowen and the O'Boyles of Boylagh, until the Flight of the Earls in 1607 changed the north forever. Donegal holds one of the largest Gaeltacht areas in Ireland, where Irish is still the daily language, and its music, weaving and language traditions remain unusually strong.
