About the Wemyss Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Wemyss as a Clan/Family tartan. The Wemyss sett is a handsome design of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines, a cool and dignified pattern of the Fife coast, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Wemyss, pronounced "Weems," takes its name from the Gaelic uaimh, "a cave," for the famous sea caves of the Fife shore where the family made their home. The clan motto Je Pense, "I think," makes Wemyss tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Wemyss Tartan Pattern and Colours

Wemyss tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of the Fife coast and the Firth of Forth. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Wemyss Heritage

The Wemyss chiefs are among the very few Lowland families descended from the old Celtic nobility, springing from the MacDuff Earls of Fife, and Wemyss Castle above the sea has been their seat since the twelfth century. The name comes from the sandstone sea caves along the coast below, whose walls bear the greatest gathering of carved Pictish symbols in Scotland, a memory of the country long before the family was first written down.

Sir Michael Wemyss was among those sent to Norway in 1290 to bring home the infant Queen Margaret, the Maid of Norway; he later forsook Edward I for Robert the Bruce, and saw his castle sacked for it. In February 1565 Wemyss Castle was the scene of the first meeting of Mary, Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley. The family were made Earls of Wemyss by Charles I, and prospered from the salt and coal of Fife. The chief is Wemyss of that Ilk; the crest is a swan, the motto Je Pense.
