About the Weir Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Weir as a Clan/Family tartan. The Weir sett is a distinctive design of purple and blue crossed with green and black, a dignified and uncommon palette among Scottish setts, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Weir is an old Lowland family of Lanarkshire, long seated at Blackwood in the Clyde valley, and is today an armigerous clan. The clan motto Vero Nihil Verius, "nothing truer than truth," makes Weir tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Weir Tartan Pattern and Colours

Weir tartan is recognised for its distinctive purple and blue ground crossed with green and black — an unusual and handsome palette. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Weir Heritage

The Weirs appear in the records of Lanarkshire from early times: Richard Wer of Lanarkshire rendered homage to Edward I in 1296, and before that Rothald de Were was Baillie of Lesmahagow, holding Blackwood and other lands under a charter of the Abbot of Kelso. The Weirs of Blackwood, who claimed descent from Ralph de Wer, held their Clyde valley lands from 1400, with branches at Stonebyres and elsewhere.

In the Highlands the name Weir was taken up by families of MacNair, a name associated with the clans of Buchanan, MacFarlane and MacNab, so that the name is found on both sides of the Highland line. In 1733 the heiress of the Weirs of Blackwood married a son of the Earl of Hopetoun, and their line carried the name onward as Hope-Weir. The motto is Vero Nihil Verius.
