About the Taylor Clan Tartan

The Taylor name is one of the classic occupational surnames, from the French tailler, to cut — the tailor who cut and made the cloth. In the Highlands the Taylors are a recognised sept of Clan Cameron, and they have a tartan of their own, designed in 1955 with double black lines in memory of Taillear Dubh na Tuaighe, the Black Taylor of the Axe.

The name is also found in the Lowlands as Tailyour, an old family name in its own right. Those of the name may wear the Taylor sept tartan or the Cameron tartan of the clan with which the name is associated.

Taylor Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Taylor sett is built on a warm red ground crossed with green and blue, with the distinctive double black lines that give it its meaning. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more vivid.

Taylor Heritage

The name is very old in Scottish record: Walter Cissor received a grant of land in the twelfth century, Alexander le Taillur was valet to Alexander III in 1276, and Bryce le Taillur was among the Scots taken at Dunbar Castle in 1296 in the Wars of Independence.

In Lochaber the Taylors trace themselves to Donald Cameron, born about 1550, a son of Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, fourteenth chief; nursed by a tailor's wife at Lundavra, he became famed as Taillear Dubh na Tuaighe, the Black Taylor of the Axe, and his people called themselves the Children of the Black Taylor of the Camerons. His memory is kept in the Cameron chief's arms, whose supporters bear the Lochaber axe, and in the double black lines of the Taylor tartan.
