About the Rutledge Family Tartan
The Rutledge name — also Routledge and Ruttledge — is an Anglo-Scottish Border name, first recorded in the 15th century in Liddesdale and about Roxburgh, Hawick and Cavers on the Teviot. It is understood to be a place name meaning something like "the red pool" or boggy stream. Those of the name wear the Rutledge tartan.
The Rutledges were among the riding surnames of the Border, and though the family has no chief today, it keeps its own tartan and the motto Non Sumus Praeda, "we are not prey" — an answer to an old slander made against them in the March country.

Rutledge Heritage
The Rutledges lived in the Debatable Land, the strip of country claimed by both kingdoms, where the law reached only as far as a strong horse could carry it. Symon Routledge and his son Mathew were charged with the spoiling of goods in 1494; David Routledge was bailie to James Douglas of Cavers in 1512; and Martin de Routledge, a Scot, was Procurator of the Scottish Nation at the University of Orleans in 1537.
The Rough Wooing of the 1540s laid waste their Scottish lands, and the family scattered — some to Kilham in Northumberland, others to Bewcastle and Lanercost in Cumberland, where by the 1580s they made up much of the population, and others still to Ireland. From there the name went on to America, Canada and Australia, where it is now far more numerous than in Scotland itself.
