The chiefs of Clan Rose are of Norman descent, from Ros near Caen in Normandy, and are quite distinct from the ancient Celtic Clan Ross. The family came north through marriage: the heiress whose family held Kilravock married Andrew de Bosco, and their daughter Marie married Hugo de Ross of Geddes about 1290. The barony of Kilravock was created for Hugh Rose in 1293, and the family have held it ever since.
The seventh Baron built the tower of Kilravock about 1460, and the Roses kept their place among unruly neighbours by stout walls and shrewd alliances. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed at Kilravock and afterwards wrote to the tenth Baron as a trusted friend. In 1746 the castle entertained Prince Charles Edward Stuart while the Duke of Cumberland lodged nearby — days before Culloden was fought a few miles away. Kilravock remains the clan seat.
