About the Fraser of Lovat Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Fraser of Lovat as a Clan/Family tartan. The sett is a handsome design of red crossed with green, blue and white, and it is the softer, weathered colouring of this Fraser tartan that has become known to millions through a popular television series set in the Jacobite years.

Clan Fraser of Lovat is a Highland clan of Inverness-shire, whose chief is Lord Lovat, known in Gaelic as MacShimidh, "son of Simon." The clan motto Je Suis Prest, "I am ready," makes Fraser tartan among the most popular of all for heritage clothing and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Fraser Tartan Pattern and Colours

The Fraser of Lovat tartan is a warm red sett crossed with green, blue and white. In modern shades it is bright and bold; in the weathered and muted shades, softened as though aged by sun and rain, it takes on the earthy tones familiar from screen and from the Highland glens themselves.

Fraser of Lovat Heritage

The Frasers came north from the Borders in the 13th century and settled about Beauly and the Aird, west of Inverness, where the Lovat line was founded. The clan's hardest day was the Battle of Blar-na-Leine in 1544, fought by Loch Lochy, where the Frasers and their opponents were almost destroyed; tradition holds that the clan survived only because eighty widows bore sons after the battle.

In the Jacobite years the clan followed the Stuart cause: the Fraser regiment fought at Culloden in 1746, and Simon Fraser, eleventh Lord Lovat, lost his life for his part in the rising. His son later raised the Fraser Highlanders, who served with distinction in Canada, and the family seat remains at Beaufort Castle near Beauly. The crest is a stag's head, the plant badge yew, the motto Je Suis Prest.
