Their strongholds included Airlie Castle from 1430, Forter in Glenisla, and Cortachy near Kirriemuir.
In 1640, when the first Earl of Airlie refused to sign the Covenant, the Earl of Argyll led a force that burned the great tower of Airlie — the deed remembered ever after in the ballad of the Bonnie House o' Airlie. The Ogilvies were steadfast for the Stuarts, coming out in both 1715 and 1745, and Lord Ogilvy led his regiment at Culloden. Today the chief is the Earl of Airlie, whose seat is Cortachy Castle. The crest is a lady holding a portcullis.
