About the Nicolson Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Nicolson as a Clan/Family tartan. The Nicolson sett is a handsome design of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white, a cool and dignified pattern, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Nicolson is a Lowland Scottish clan, whose chiefs are Nicolson of that Ilk, Lords Carnock. The name means "son of Nicol," from Nicholas, and the clan badge is a sprig of juniper. The clan motto Generositate makes Nicolson tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Nicolson Tartan Pattern and Colours

Nicolson tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — cool, dignified colours of the Lowland country. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Nicolson Heritage

The Lowland Nicolsons rose through law, the church and trade: from a line of Aberdeen merchants came James Nicolson, Bishop of Dunkeld, while his elder brother John, an Edinburgh lawyer, acquired the lands of Lasswade in Midlothian by charter in 1592. John's son was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1629 as Nicolson of that Ilk and Lasswade, and a second baronetcy followed in 1637 for the Nicolsons of Carnock, near Stirling.

The family gave Scotland and Britain many notable servants, among them Admiral Sir Frederick Nicolson and the diplomat Sir Arthur Nicolson, ambassador to Russia, who was created Baron Carnock in 1916. In 1985 the fourth Lord Carnock was recognised by the Lord Lyon as Nicolson of that Ilk and chief of Clan Nicolson; three years later the Lord Lyon recognised the separate Highland clan of MacNeacail of Scorrybreac, so that the two lines are today distinct. The crest is a lion issuant, the badge juniper.
