Adam Nisbet of that Ilk received a charter from Robert the Bruce for the lands of Knocklies, on condition he provide a knight for the king's army.
The Nesbitts were loyal to the Scottish crown through the centuries, and staunch Royalists in the civil wars, for which they lost their ancestral estate. The most celebrated of the name was Alexander Nisbet, whose great work A System of Heraldry, published in 1722, remains one of the foundations of Scottish heraldry. The chief is Nesbitt of that Ilk; the crest is a boar, the motto I Byde It.
