About the Morrison Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Morrison as a Clan/Family tartan. The Morrison name is worn in two main setts: a green Morrison, based on the MacKay tartan with a red line added, in memory of the clan's old ties to the MacKays, and a bold red Morrison — both worn in ancient and modern shades.

Clan Morrison, in Gaelic Mac Ghille Mhoire, is one of the most distinctively Hebridean of clans, long associated with the Isle of Lewis. The clan motto Teaghlach Phabbay, "the family of Pabbay," makes Morrison tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Morrison Tartan Pattern and Colours

The green Morrison tartan draws on a ground of green and blue crossed with black, lifted by a distinctive red line; there is also a bold red Morrison. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Morrison Heritage

The Morrisons of Lewis were the hereditary brieves, or judges, of the island, who administered the old Celtic law under the MacLeods of Lewis, and for this were known as Clann-na-Breitheamh, the Clan of the Judges. Their stronghold was Dùn Èistean, a dramatic sea-stack fortress off the coast of Ness, reached only by a narrow bridge above the Atlantic surf. The family of the chief is known in Gaelic as Teaghlach Phabbay, the family of Pabbay, an island in the Sound of Harris.

The Morrisons long contended with the MacAulays and the MacLeods, and after the fall of the Lords of the Isles their chief and kinsmen suffered in the lawless years that followed; many moved to Durness in the north and to other lands. Though the name arose in more than one part of Scotland, the Lewis Morrisons are the heart of the clan tradition. The chiefship, revived in modern times, is held by Morrison of Ruchdi; the motto is Teaghlach Phabbay.
