The greatest of the name was John Mercer, a wealthy burgess who was Provost of Perth three times in the 14th century, an ambassador to England, France and Holland, and a man of such "inestimable wealth" that the English seized him for ransom.
His son, Sir Andrew Mercer, led a bold sea-raid on the English fleet at Scarborough in revenge. The Mercers held the estate of Meikleour, later famous for its towering beech hedge, and Sir Henry Mercer fell with so many of Scotland's gentry at Flodden in 1513. Through marriage the Aldie line joined the Murrays of Atholl. The motto is Crux Christi Nostra Corona, "the cross of Christ is our crown."
