The clan motto Vil God I Zal is said to have been first cried at the Battle of Teba in Spain in 1330, when Sir James Douglas cast the heart of Bruce among the enemy and the Menzies chief charged to recover it.
The chiefs built their seat at Weem, and the magnificent Castle Menzies still stands by the River Tay near Aberfeldy, cared for today by the Clan Menzies Society. It was a Menzies of Culdares who, in 1738, first brought the larch tree to Scotland from the Tyrol. Bonnie Prince Charlie rested two nights at Castle Menzies on his way to Culloden. The crest is a savage's head, the plant badge the rowan, the motto Vil God I Zal.
