About the McKerrell Clan Tartan

Clan McKerrell is an old family of Ayrshire, recognised by the Court of the Lord Lyon, though as an armigerous clan it has no chief recognised at present. The name is of ancient Celtic origin, taken by the historian George Fraser Black to be from the Gaelic Mac Fhearghail, "son of Fearghal." The family are the McKerrells of Hillhouse, and those of the name wear the McKerrell tartan.

This collection brings a fitting Scottish tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts, honouring an old family of the Ayrshire coast.

McKerrell Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on warm gold and green crossed with dark lines — dignified, earthy colours of the Ayrshire country, fitting for an old family long seated near the shores of the Firth of Clyde.

McKerrell Heritage

The name is found in early times in Carrick, in the south of Ayrshire: a Recherus MecMaccharil witnessed a charter of the Earl of Carrick in the reign of William the Lion. The family's proudest early figure is Sir John McKirel, who distinguished himself at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, where he wounded and took prisoner Sir Ralph Percy, second in command of the English army.

The McKerrells became the lairds of Hillhouse, near Troon in Ayrshire, which they held from the 16th century or earlier; John McKerrell, first Laird of Hillhouse, was descended from that line. In 1839 the future Emperor Napoleon III stayed at Hillhouse during the famous Eglinton Tournament. In modern times the lairdship returned to the family lands, and the McKerrell name endures with pride.
