About the MacQuarrie Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacQuarrie as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacQuarrie sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white, a cool and dignified pattern of the western isles, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacQuarrie, from the Gaelic Mac Guaire, "son of Guaire" (the noble), is one of the seven clans of Siol Alpin, tracing descent from Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of Scots. The clan slogan An t-Arm Breac Dearg, "the red-tartaned army," makes MacQuarrie tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacQuarrie Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacQuarrie tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — cool, dignified colours of the Inner Hebrides. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

MacQuarrie Heritage

The MacQuarries held the islands of Ulva, Staffa and Gometra, and lands on Mull, from ancient times, one of the oldest of the Highland clans. As a clan of Siol Alpin, they claimed kinship with the MacKinnons and MacGregors, their progenitor Guaire being reckoned a brother of the ancestors of those clans. They fought for Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, and followed the Lords of the Isles and, later, the MacLeans of Duart.

The clan suffered a heavy blow at Inverkeithing in 1651, where the chief, Allan MacQuarrie, and most of his men fell fighting beside the MacLeans for Charles II. The last chief, Lachlan MacQuarrie of Ulva, entertained Dr Johnson and Boswell in 1773, but debt forced him to sell Ulva; he joined the army at sixty-three and lived to be over a hundred. His kinsman Lachlan Macquarie became Governor of New South Wales, honoured as the "Father of Australia."
