About the MacNab Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacNab as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacNab sett is a rich and handsome design of red, green and dark green crossed with fine lines, a warm and dignified pattern of the central Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacNab, from the Gaelic Mac an Aba, "son of the abbot," sprang from the lay abbots of Glen Dochart and is reckoned one of the clans of Siol Alpin, of royal descent. The clan motto Timor Omnis Abesto means "let fear be far from all," making MacNab tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacNab Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacNab tartan is recognised for its rich red and green character crossed with fine lines, warm and dignified colours of Breadalbane and Loch Tay. Ancient shades appear softer and more earth-toned, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

MacNab Heritage

The MacNabs sprang from the abbots of Glen Dochart, and by tradition from Abraruadh, a son of Kenneth MacAlpin, making them one of the seven clans of Siol Alpin. Kin to the Comyns, they joined the MacDougalls against Robert the Bruce and nearly took him at Dalrigh in 1306; for this their lands were forfeited after Bannockburn, though a charter from David II in 1336 restored their fortunes. Their seat was MacNab Castle on the island of Eilean Ran, and later Kinnell House at Killin.

The MacNabs are famous for their long feud with the Neishes, ended when "Smooth John" MacNab and his brothers carried a boat over the hills by night to the Neish island on Loch Earn and destroyed their enemies — a deed recalled by the clan crest, a savage's head, and the motto. The clan followed Montrose, and after long decline the chiefship revived; the present chief is the twenty-fourth MacNab of MacNab.
