About the MacKinnon Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacKinnon as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacKinnon sett is a handsome design of green and blue crossed with red and black, a warm and dignified pattern of the western isles, worn in both ancient and modern shades, with dress and hunting variations.

Clan MacKinnon, from the Gaelic Mac Fhionghuin, "son of Fingon" (the fair-born), is an ancient clan of Mull and Skye, one of the seven clans of Siol Alpin, tracing descent from the old royal line of Scotland. The clan motto Audentes Fortuna Juvat means "fortune favours the bold," making MacKinnon tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacKinnon Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacKinnon tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with bands of red and black — warm, handsome colours of the Hebrides. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal, with distinctive dress and hunting variations also worn.

MacKinnon Heritage

As one of the seven clans of Siol Alpin, the MacKinnons claim kinship with the MacGregors and the ancient kings of Scots; a bond of 1671 between the two chiefs affirmed they came "from two brothers of old descent." A branch of the clan gave shelter to Robert the Bruce as a fugitive, and after his victory at Bannockburn the clan was rewarded with lands on Skye. A branch of the chiefly house served as hereditary abbots of Iona, the last being John MacKinnon, ninth chief and Bishop of the Isles, who died about 1500.

From their castles of Dunakin and Dun Ringill, the MacKinnons held lands on Mull and Skye, at times Masters of the Household to the Lords of the Isles and Standard Bearers to the MacDonalds of Sleat. Staunch Jacobites, they came out in the '45, and it was old John MacKinnon who helped shelter Prince Charles in his flight; for this the clan lost much after Culloden. The crest is a boar's head, the badge the pine, the motto Audentes Fortuna Juvat.
