About the MacDougall Tartan
Clan MacDougall is one of the most ancient of the Highland clans, the senior line of the great Somerled, Lord of the Isles. The clan takes its name from Dougall, Somerled's eldest son, whose name comes from the Gaelic dubh-gall, "dark stranger." As Lords of Lorn, the MacDougalls once ruled a vast sea-kingdom of mainland Argyll and the isles from their strongholds of Dunollie and Dunstaffnage. A clan with its own chief, the MacDougall of MacDougall, and its own tartan.

MacDougall Clan Heritage
From Dougall, eldest son of Somerled, the MacDougalls held Lorn and the isles of Mull, Lismore, Jura and others, styling themselves Lords of Lorn and building the great castles of Dunollie and Dunstaffnage. In 1296 they defeated the Campbells at the Battle of Red Ford, where the Campbell chief Cailean Mor fell. But their power was broken by their enmity with Robert the Bruce.
The MacDougalls, kin to the murdered Red Comyn, were Bruce's bitter foes. At Dalrigh in 1306 they nearly took the king, and tore from his cloak the famous Brooch of Lorn, kept by the clan to this day; but Bruce triumphed at last at the Pass of Brander, and the MacDougalls lost much of their power. Their chiefs, the MacDougalls of Dunollie, hold the ancient seat still. The crest is an armoured arm holding a cross, the motto Buaidh no Bas.
