About the County Longford Tartan
The Longford tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county rather than to any family, and anyone with a Longford connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; their place has been won by adoption, above all among the many Longford families who settled in Britain, America and Australia.
Longford Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on greens with darker lines and cooler accents — the green of small midland fields, the brown of bog, and the water of the Shannon and Lough Ree along the county's western edge.
County Longford Heritage
Longford is a small inland county on the edge of the midlands, bounded to the west by the Shannon and Lough Ree. Its name comes from Longphort Uí Fhearghail, the fortress of O'Farrell, for this was Annaly, the country ruled by the O'Farrells for some six hundred years.
In the bog at Corlea archaeologists uncovered a great oak trackway laid across the wetland in the year 148 before Christ, a road built with astonishing labour and now preserved for visitors. Ardagh has its early church associations, and the county was the boyhood country of the writer Oliver Goldsmith, whose village scenes were drawn from these midland fields.
