About the County Kildare Tartan
The Kildare tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s — a district tartan belonging to the county rather than to any family, and open to all who claim a connection with it.
The county tartans are modern designs and not formally sanctioned by the counties; they have won their place by adoption, giving Irish families a way to name their own ground rather than the island in general.
Kildare Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on warm golds and greens with darker lines — the gold of ripe grass and stubble on the Curragh plain, and the green of the pasture that has bred Irish racehorses for centuries.
County Kildare Heritage
Kildare is a county of plains: the Curragh, some five thousand acres of unfenced grassland, has been common land and gathering ground since prehistory, and is now the heart of Irish horse racing and breeding. The Bog of Allen spreads to the west, and the Grand Canal cuts across the county on its way from Dublin to the Shannon.
The county takes its name from Cill Dara, the church of the oak, where Saint Brigid founded her monastery in the fifth century and where a fire was tended in her honour for centuries. Nearby rises the Hill of Allen, the legendary seat of Fionn mac Cumhaill and the Fianna. In the medieval age Kildare was the power base of the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Kildare, whose castle at Maynooth was among the greatest in Ireland.
