About the County Fermanagh Tartan
The Fermanagh tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county rather than to any family, and anyone with a Fermanagh connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs rather than ancient patterns, and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; they have earned their place through adoption by Irish families at home and across the diaspora.
Fermanagh Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on cool teals and greens with darker lines — the water of Upper and Lower Lough Erne, the green of the small fields between them, and the grey of limestone and old church stone.
County Fermanagh Heritage
Fermanagh is a county built round water: Upper and Lower Lough Erne run through it from end to end, with Enniskillen standing on the island between them. Boats have always mattered more here than roads, and the loughs are scattered with islands, each with its own history.
On Devenish Island stands a round tower and the ruins of a monastery founded in the sixth century; on Boa Island, two-faced stone figures of great age look out from an old graveyard; and beneath Cuilcagh the Marble Arch caves run through the limestone. This was the country of the Maguires — Fir Manach, the men of Manach, giving the county its name — who ruled the lakeland with their fleet of boats until the seventeenth century.
