About the County Clare Tartan
The Clare tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, and anyone with a Clare connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs rather than ancient patterns, and are not formally sanctioned by the counties themselves; they have earned their place through adoption, especially among the great Clare diaspora in America and Australia.
Clare Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on cool teals, greens and greys — the Atlantic water below the Cliffs of Moher, the pale limestone pavement of the Burren, and the green of the pasture between them.
County Clare Heritage
Clare lies between the Shannon and the Atlantic, and its western edge is one of the strangest and finest landscapes in Ireland: the Burren, a grey limestone pavement where arctic and Mediterranean flowers grow side by side in the cracks, and where the portal tomb of Poulnabrone has stood for more than five thousand years. Further south the Cliffs of Moher fall seven hundred feet into the sea.
This was Thomond, the country of the O'Briens, descendants of Brian Boru, whose castles at Bunratty and Dromoland still stand. Clare has also long been a heartland of Irish traditional music, and the county tartan carries the motto Dílis d'ár nOidhreacht, "true to our heritage" — a fitting phrase for a place that kept its music, its language and its memory.
