About the Bruce County Tartan

The Bruce County tartan is a district tartan — it belongs to the county in Ontario rather than to any one family, so anyone who lives there, was born there or traces family to it may wear it, whatever their surname.

The county takes its name from James Bruce, eighth Earl of Elgin, Governor General of Canada in the middle of the nineteenth century, and through him from the Scottish house of Bruce. That connection is part of why a tartan sits so naturally with the place.

Bruce County Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on warm golds and greens with darker lines and a blue accent — the gold of grain fields, the green of the Bruce Peninsula woods and pasture, and the blue of Lake Huron along the county's long western shore.

Bruce County Heritage

Bruce County lies on the eastern shore of Lake Huron in south-western Ontario, running north up the Bruce Peninsula between the open lake and Georgian Bay, where the Niagara Escarpment ends in white limestone cliffs above clear water. Farming, fishing and forestry shaped the county from its first settlement.

From the 1850s the county drew settlers in numbers, among them a great many Scots — Highlanders and Lowlanders alike, some arriving directly, others moving on from earlier Canadian settlements. Place names, churches, Highland games and pipe bands across the county still carry that inheritance, and Bruce County remains one of the most Scottish corners of Ontario.
