About the Whitefoord Family Tartan

The Whitefoord name — also Whiteford — is a Scottish territorial name, taken from the lands of Whiteford in Renfrewshire, where the family were the Whitefoords of that Ilk. Later branches held broad estates in Ayrshire, at Blairquhan and Ballochmyle. As a family name rather than a Highland clan, Whitefoord is most fittingly matched with a family or Ayrshire district tartan.

This collection brings a fitting Scottish tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts, honouring an old family of the Scottish west.

Whitefoord Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on a cool ground of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — dignified, classic colours fitting for an old family of Renfrewshire and the Ayrshire country.

Whitefoord Heritage

The Whitefoords take their name from the lands of Whiteford in Renfrewshire, held by the family from early times as the Whitefoords of that Ilk. From the west country they spread into Ayrshire, where they gathered the estates of Blairquhan and Ballochmyle, and in 1701 Adam Whitefoord of Blairquhan was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia.

Sir John Whitefoord of Ballochmyle, the third Baronet, built the fine Whitefoord House on the Canongate in Edinburgh, which still stands. He lost his Ayrshire estate in the collapse of a great banking house in 1773, and thereafter lived in Edinburgh; a friend and early patron of Robert Burns, he is remembered in the poet's verses on Ballochmyle. The baronetcy ended with his death in 1803, but the Whitefoord name endures.
