About the Wedderburn Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Wedderburn as a Clan/Family tartan. The Wedderburn sett is a bold and handsome design of red crossed with green, blue and black, a warm and dignified pattern, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan Wedderburn is a Lowland Scottish clan whose name comes from the lands of Wedderburn in Berwickshire. The plant badge is the beech, and the clan motto Non Degener, "not degenerate," makes Wedderburn tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Wedderburn Tartan Pattern and Colours

Wedderburn Heritage

The first of the name on record is Wautier de Wederburn, who set his seal to the Ragman Roll in 1296, and the lands of Wedderburn lay in Berwickshire in the Borders. By the 15th century a branch had settled in Dundee, where they became one of the leading families of the burgh, holding the office of town clerk for generations and building the fine estate of Blackness.

Three Wedderburn brothers of Dundee were among the makers of the Scottish Reformation's best-loved book of sacred songs, and Sir Alexander Wedderburn served as a commissioner for the Treaty of Ripon in 1641. The family were steadfast Jacobites: Sir John Wedderburn, fifth Baronet of Blackness, came out for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, was taken at Culloden in 1746 and lost his life and his title for the cause. The chief today is the Earl of Dundee, Scrymgeour-Wedderburn.
