About the Wauchope Family Tartan

The Wauchope name — also Waughope and Walkinshaw of old spelling — is a Scottish territorial name, taken from the valley of Wauchope, or Wauchopedale, in Dumfriesshire near Langholm. From these Border lands the family rose to prominence in Midlothian as the Wauchopes of Niddrie Marischal. As a family name rather than a Highland clan, Wauchope is most fittingly matched with a family or Lowland district tartan.

This collection brings a fitting Scottish tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts, honouring an old name of the Borders and the Lothians.

Wauchope Tartan Pattern and Colours

This collection draws on a cool ground of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — dignified, classic colours fitting for an old family of the Border dales and the Lothian country.

Wauchope Heritage

The name comes from Wauchopedale in Dumfriesshire, a valley of the western Borders where the family first held land in the medieval centuries. From the Borders they moved east, and by the 14th century the Wauchopes were established at Niddrie Marischal in Midlothian, a few miles from Edinburgh, where they held their estate for some six hundred years.

The Wauchopes of Niddrie Marischal were figures of standing in the affairs of Edinburgh and the Lothians, and gave many sons to the service of the Scottish and British armies, among them General Andrew Wauchope, a distinguished and much-loved soldier of the 19th century. From Midlothian the name spread across Scotland and beyond, keeping its old link to the Border valley from which it sprang.
