About the Wardlaw Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records Wardlaw as a Clan/Family tartan. The Wardlaw sett is a handsome design of gold and green crossed with dark lines, a warm and dignified pattern, worn in both ancient and modern shades — fitting for a family whose crest is a star.

Clan Wardlaw is a Lowland Scottish family, long seated at Torry and Pitreavie in Fife, and today an armigerous clan. The name is also reckoned a sept of Clan Maxwell, whose war cry is Wardlaw. The clan motto Familias Firmat Pietas makes Wardlaw tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

Wardlaw Tartan Pattern and Colours

Wardlaw tartan is recognised for its warm gold and green character crossed with dark lines — dignified, earthy colours of the Fife country. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

Wardlaw Heritage

The first of the name on record is Henry de Wardlaw, granted half the barony of Wilton in Roxburghshire by Robert the Bruce; the family later made their principal seat at Torry in Fife. Sir Henry Wardlaw of Torry married a niece of Walter, High Steward of Scotland, and their son Walter became Bishop of Glasgow in 1367 and was raised to be a cardinal in 1381; he lies buried in Glasgow Cathedral.

The cardinal's nephew, Henry Wardlaw, Bishop of St Andrews, was among the most celebrated men of his age: he founded the University of St Andrews, winning its papal charter in 1413, the first university in Scotland. A later Sir Henry Wardlaw, chamberlain to Queen Anne of Denmark, acquired Pitreavie and was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1631. The crest is an estoile, the motto Familias Firmat Pietas.
